SOS Children’s Villages Bujumbura Programme location

Located in Nyakabiga, Mukaza commune, this flagship programme was established on October 1, 1985, and has continuously evolved to respond to the needs of children and communities in Burundi’s economic capital.

The Bujumbura Programme of SOS Children’s Villages adopts a comprehensive approach to child protection and development, focusing on strengthening families and supporting children who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing it.

Providing quality alternative care for children

The SOS Children’s Village in Bujumbura offers a safe and nurturing family environment for children without parental care. Originally built with 10 family houses, the village was expanded to 13 homes, with the capacity to care for up to 130 children.

Within these SOS families, children receive emotional, social, and educational support, enabling them to grow independently and confidently.

Strengthening families to prevent separation

Preventing family separation is a key component of the programme. The Family Strengthening Programme, launched in 2004, now supports hundreds of children and young people within their families by enhancing household resilience and parenting capacity.

Interventions are mainly focused in the Buterere and Mugoboka communities, using a community-based and sustainable approach.

Access to quality education

SOS Children’s Villages Bujumbura promotes inclusive and quality education through its schools. The SOS Primary School (now Fundamental School) and the SOS Secondary School have been providing structured learning environments and supporting children’s academic success since the 1990s.

Access to healthcare services

Health is a key pillar of the programme. The SOS Medical Centre, operational since 1992 and rehabilitated in 2008, provides essential healthcare services in line with national standards, including basic care and support in the fight against major diseases such as HIV/AIDS.

An integrated approach for lasting impact

The Bujumbura Programme is built on an integrated model combining alternative care, family strengthening, education, and healthcare. This holistic approach ensures that children grow up in a protective environment while families are empowered to build a stable and sustainable future.
