Small Group Homes: Responding to evolving needs in Burundi

To provide support tailored to the individual needs of children and young people, and in response to changing contexts, SOS Children’s Villages in Burundi continues to diversify its care options.

In 2024, the organization introduced a new care option: the Small Group Home. This model responds to the specific needs of:

  • Adolescents transitioning from family-type care who require greater independence while still benefiting from structured support

  • Children and young people living alone in the community after losing parental care, particularly when placement in foster or kinship families is not feasible

A supportive and structured environment

Small Group Homes provide a safe and stable living environment where a limited number of children and young people live together under professional guidance. The model offers:

  • Age-appropriate support and supervision

  • Development of life and socio-educational skills

  • Preparation for independent living

  • Continued emotional and social support

This care setting bridges the gap between family-based care and full independence, ensuring that young people are equipped with the skills, confidence, and resilience needed for adulthood.

Expanding protection and care options

Between 2024 and 2025, the introduction of the Small Group Home care option enabled SOS Children’s Villages in Burundi to provide alternative care to 49 additional children and young people, alongside those supported through other care models.

By diversifying alternative care options, SOS Children’s Villages in Burundi strengthens community-based child protection mechanisms and ensures that every child and young person can access the care setting that best meets their individual needs.
