Around the world, and particularly in Burundi, many children grow up without parental protection due to factors such as war, the death of parents, abandonment, abuse, neglect, family conflicts, or instability caused by crises.
In response, SOS Children’s Villages provides a range of care solutions, including alternative care, which creates a safe, protective, stable, and nurturing environment where children can grow up and build their own future.
The alternative care programme in Burundi has been in place since 1979 and has already restored hope and purpose to over 2,227 children and young people who had lost parental care. Alternative care is a child protection mechanism that offers children without parental support a stable, secure, and loving environment, allowing them to develop their potential outside their biological family, either temporarily or permanently.
SOS Children’s Villages in Burundi provides alternative care through multiple care options, including:
Currently, this programme provides alternative care to 2,028 children and young people, helping them grow up in a supportive environment and giving them the opportunity to thrive.
