Hundreds of children in the Buterere zone of Bujumbura will no longer sit on dusty floors during class. On 24 February 2026, SOS Children’s Villages Bujumbura programme handed over 333 school desks to four public schools, responding to a critical shortage of classroom furniture that had long affected learning conditions for more than 12,550 students, including over 300 children supported through the Family Strengthening Programme.
The donation followed a joint needs assessment with school leaders that highlighted overcrowded classrooms, inadequate learning materials and the absence of desks for both fundamental and post‑fundamental levels. The desks were distributed according to need:
Speaking at the ceremony, the National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Burundi emphasized that quality learning environments are essential to children’s success and well‑being. “Every child deserves a space where they can sit comfortably, learn with dignity and imagine a brighter future,” he said.
The impact was immediate and emotional. “Having a desk helps us concentrate and perform better,” said Chaste, one of the students. Jean‑Claude, from ECOFO Bumwe, added, “Before, I went home with back pain and dusty notebooks. Thank you to everyone who thought of us.”
Local authorities expressed deep appreciation, noting that although needs remain high, this contribution marks a significant step towards improving the teaching and learning environment in the zone.
The gesture also reinforces an existing partnership between SOS Children’s Villages and the beneficiary schools. Through the Family Strengthening Programme, more than 945 children from vulnerable households in Bujumbura receive educational support and family empowerment services. A Memorandum of Understanding further commits partners to strengthening local capacities, promoting child protection and improving access to education and health services.
In a context marked by overcrowded classrooms, high rates of school dropout and recurring health challenges such as malaria and diarrhoeal diseases, this support is a tangible investment in children’s rights, dignity and future.
