Growing up with the right s upport: Bero’s journey towards successful family reintegration

Bero is a 14-year-old boy. He was welcomed into SOS Children’s Village Cibitoke in 2013, at the age of two, following the death of his biological mother. At that critical moment, his father was facing severe hardship and was solely responsible for a large family of nine children. In these circumstances, he did not have the means to meet the basic needs of an infant.

Bero’s admission was an essential protective measure, allowing him to grow up in a safe and stable environment at a time when his family was experiencing a situation of vulnerability. As his father recalls: “After his mother passed away, I did not have the means to meet my child’s basic needs. SOS Children’s Village Cibitoke was a crucial support during that difficult time.”

At SOS Children’s Village Cibitoke, Bero received care tailored to his needs: a protective living environment, educational support, and access to schooling from early childhood through primary education. At the same time, maintaining family connections was encouraged. Bero regularly spent his holidays with his father and siblings, helping preserve his sense of belonging to his family.

Over time, Bero began to show signs of declining motivation at school and social withdrawal. Despite his abilities, his school performance decreased.

Through individualized support, he was able to express a deep need: to live with his biological family. This active listening to the child played a key role in guiding decisions in his best interests.

Strengthening the family to enable reintegration

Before any decision was made, a thorough assessment of the family and community situation was carried out. Bero’s father expressed his willingness to fully resume his parental role, while also highlighting the need to strengthen his livelihood.

SOS Children’s Villages supported the family through an income-generating activity (pig farming) alongside agriculture. This economic strengthening contributed to sustainably improving the household’s living conditions.

The family also has access to essential services, including a nearby school, health centre, and clean water, creating an environment that supports the child’s development.

A family reintegration that brings lasting change

Since his reintegration, Bero has shown significant positive changes. He is now more fulfilled, confident, and engaged in his studies. In the first term of the 2025–2026 school year, he ranked 4th in his class, an achievement he had never reached before.

Beyond school results, his emotional well-being has greatly improved. He proudly shares his successes with his SOS caregiver:
“Mum, I’m very happy. I ranked 4th in my class out of 66 students.”

A future built within his family and community

Today, Bero is growing up within his family and community, surrounded by his siblings. He actively participates in community life, plays football with peers, and takes part in local activities, including youth camps. Motivated and determined, he has set a clear goal: to continue his education through university and become a teacher.

His family reintegration illustrates a sustainable solution, one where strengthening families and listening to children’s needs helps build positive pathways for the future.
