From Uncertainty to Awakening

Cecilia, a 44‑year‑old mother of three, lives in Buterere, Bujumbura City. Her life took a painful turn when her husband abandoned her while she was pregnant with her youngest son. Left alone to care for one girl and two boys aged between 6 and 16, Cecilia faced overwhelming uncertainty. Providing food, education, and shelter became a daily struggle, and despair slowly gave way to depression.

By the time she joined the Family Strengthening Programme of SOS Children’s Villages in Burundi in 2020, Cecilia felt powerless and unsure of her future.

Through SOS Children’s Villages, Cecilia received holistic support focused on empowering families to stand on their own feet. She participated in training sessions on children’s rights, positive parenting, hygiene, and family responsibilities. These learning spaces did more than share knowledge. They transformed her mindset.

Step by step, Cecilia began to regain confidence, take ownership of her role as a parent, and believe again in her capacity to change her family’s story. The regular follow‑ups and encouragement from the Family strengthening team played a vital role in helping her overcome depression and rediscover her inner strength.

“I didn’t know I could do better. It is like they revealed a hidden power within me,” Cecilia shared proudly during a home visit by the team.

A family rebuilt with hope

As Cecilia grew stronger, her children’s lives also changed. They returned to school, and the child who had dropped out found a new opportunity through vocational training, opening the door to future independence.

With support from the programme, Cecilia received the means to start a small income‑generating business, which she now manages successfully. Today, she can provide meals for her children and pay monthly rent of 100,000 BIF (approximately USD 35), a responsibility that was once felt impossible.

In December 2025, Cecilia proudly exited the Family Strengthening Programme, standing as a resilient and empowered woman.

Looking ahead with determination

Today, Cecilia sees life through a new lens, shaped by hope, resilience, and determination. She no longer feels trapped by her past but inspired by future possibilities.

“I dream of buying land and building my own home,” she says with confidence.

Cecilia’s journey is a powerful reminder of how family strengthening interventions can restore dignity, protect children, and unlock the potential that already exists within families, even in the most difficult circumstances.
